After the demise of the first-generation LeBaron coupes and convertibles in 1986, Chrysler released the new LeBaron in 1987. The new LeBaron was based upon Chrysler's front wheel drive J platform and was available as a coupe or a convertible (which was more popular). The new LeBaron was quite stylish for its day, featuring retractable headlights. In 1993, the LeBaron's front fascia was slightly redesigned (which did away with the retractable headlights in favor of rounded flush-mounted headlights) and the coupe was dropped. The convertible ended production in 1995 to make way for the new Chrysler Sebring.
