In 1862, Hongzhang Li originated Shanghai Foreign Gun Bureau in Songjiang, Shanghai, which was renamed as Suzhu Foreign Gun Bureau the next year. It was the grandfather of ChangAn Company.

In 1865, the former ChangAn Factory moved to Nanjing and changed its name into Jinling Production Bureau.

In 1928, the former ChangAn Factory was renamed as Jinling subsidiary of Shanghai Arms Factory and Jinling Arms Factory the next year.

In 1936, the former Jiangling Machines Plant was set up in Zhuzhou, Hunan and was called Artillery Technique Research Institute.

In 1958, the former ChangAn Factory began trial production of diesel engines and machine tools and made the first light off-road Jeep 46 of Yangtze brand. In 1963, production of Jeep was stopped and transferred to Beijing Jeep Factory.

In 1982, the former ChangAn Factory began trial production of mini-cars and formal production was started the next year.

In 1984, the former Jiangling Factory developed and trial - produced engines for mini-cars. The factory became one of exclusive factories that produced engines for mini-cars the next year.

In 1986, the former ChangAn Factory began trial production of mini-vans and soon went into formal production.

In 1991, the former ChangAn Factory began trial production of ChangAn Alto mini-cars and went into formal production. The factory was approved as the exclusive place to make Alto cars and the project became one of the important technical innovations of the state.

In 1993, the former ChangAn Factory established a joint venture with Japanese Suzuki Company called ChangAn Suzuki Automobile Co. Ltd.

In 1994, the former ChangAn Factory formed basically an annual production capacity of 100,000 mini-vehicles.

Production of engines for mini-vehicles in former Jiangling Factory broke 100,000 units.

ChangAn Automobile Co. Ltd was established and formal operation began on Jan. 1.

In 1996, Chongqing ChangAn Automobile Co. Ltd was established.
