The Porsche 911 GT1 is the pride of Porsches Le-Mans efforts. The GT1 also represents the highest in technological achievements Porsche has gained though the development of its 911's previous to the GT1. The GT1 was originally developed from a 911 with Porsche instructing designer Ampferer Norbert Singer too help achieve the racers two main goals: (1) It has to look like a 911 (2) It has to be capable of wining at Le-Mans. Porsche achieved these goals by wining Le-Mans in 96. At the heart of this 911 inspired Porsche lies a 3.6 litre water cooled flat six which appears in most high performance 911's, while to increase power they added state of the art KKK K27 turbos. The 911GT1 looks like a 911 on steroids, and with 650nm to boot at 5,500rpm and with 450kw (600hp) limited by regulations, it suits its character. The fundamental drawback in racing with the conventional 911 is its flat six being placed in a rear-engine state, so Porsche moved it to the mid-engined state and with the change came instant aerodynamic-dynamic improvements. The Big winged thing gave the Mclarens an instant hurry up in practice and then ate them for breakfast in the race by leading the closest Maclaren by 16 laps in the end. Porsche now faced the task at hand of producing a hand full of cars and Homologating them for the road. The GT1 Stasseversion was detuned for street legal use by limiting it to 410kw or 550hp while still inheriting the racers double wishbone suspension at all four corners, HUGE brembo ABS carbon-fibre brakes, 4 catalytic converters for emissions, body pannels made from a Cabon-fibre/Kevelar mix and power steering. All of these features were kept to keep the thrill of the race track to the road. The road going 911GT1 has a dry weight of 1000kg and has a top speed of well over 300kph with 0-100khp in a torrid 3.6 seconds and below. It is a rare and reasonably cheap Supercar with a 1.35 million(Aus) price tag and with only around 30 being made. If you want a proven race car, Le-Mans winner and you want a Porsche with Mumbo the Porsche 911GT1 is the cream of the crop.
