L'année du lancement de la production des w124 est NOVEMBRE 1984 (millésime 1985) elle succède à la fameuse w123. C'est l'une des premières Mercedes-Benz réalisée avec l'aide de l'informatique.
   Les w124 ont été une véritable révolution pour la marque dans les années 80. Beaucoup de nouveautés ont fait leur apparition sur cette série de voiture. Tout d'abord les études sur l'aérodynamisme sont très poussées, encore plus que pour sa cousine la w201.
   Les w124 ont effectivement repris des éléments apparus sur la w201 dont particulièrement le train roulant multi-bras à l'arrière. La forme des boucliers avant, la calandre légèrement inclinée, les rétroviseurs, l'essuie-glace qui se cache sous la forme aérodynamique du capot...
   Côté moteur, des diesels mais aussi des 6 cylindres essence et des V8 dont le plus gros faisait 326cv d'origine sur la 500E seule berline construite par Mercedes-Benz et Porsche....
   Certains préparateurs y ont même glissé le v12 tiré du roadster SL (R129) !
   Le mode 4matic (en option sur certaines motorisations), transformait la w124 en une berline ou break 4 roues motrices gérées électroniquement.
   De la berline au break en passant par le cabriolet le coupé et la limousine, la 124 à lancé chez Mercedes le principe de la plateforme commune qui n'avait jusqu'alors jamais été poussé aussi loin. Le coupé mesure seulement 10cm de moins que la berline, le toit est également légèrement plus bas que la berline, mais l'allure générale reste proche de la berline pour l'avant. La ligne gagne en fluidité pour l'arrière.
   2 724 381 ont été produites entre 1984 et 1996 preuves du succès colossal de ce modèle qui représente pour beaucoup, la dernière véritable Mercedes-Benz avant le passage aux voitures embarquant l'électronique séquentielle.

   The W124 was a substantial, mid-sized luxury vehicle platform, the last in a long line of "money-no-object" Mercedes saloons and was the result of extensive development. Estate cars (and optionally, saloons) had self-levelling rear suspension very similar to that of a Citroën BX; with gas-pressurised spheres, levelling suspension struts and an underbonnet pressurising pump. Unlike Citroën, Mercedes used rear springs as well as struts. Front suspension was more conventional.
   It represented the pinnacle of road-going automotive technology at its introduction, incorporating innovations that were praised by the entire motoring press. It had one of the lowest coefficient of drag (CD) of any vehicle of the time (0.28 for the 200/200D model for European market with 185/65 R15 tires) due to its aerodynamic body including plastic molding for the undercarriage to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise. It had a single windscreen wiper that extended and contracted in a synchronized manner to cover more surface area. It even had rear headrests that would fold down at the touch of a button on the dash to improve rearward visibility when appropriate. With the exemption of the 200, which was equipped with a Stromberg carburator but was not available to the United States, fuel injection was standard, and the engines incorporated various other features that resulted in the performance of some models rivalling that of certain sports cars of the time. It set the benchmark for passenger vehicles for the next decade or so.
   The estate cars came in 5- or 7-seat models, the 7-seater having a rear-facing bench seat that folded flush luggage compartment cover and retractable cargo net. The W124 estate continued in production alongside the new W210 until the W210 estate launched more than a year later.
   The pre-facelift models from 1986 to 1993 used the model designations: 200, 230E, 260E & 300E, diesels were the 200D, 250D & the 300D. Facelfit models produced from 93' to 95' used the model designations: E200, E220, E280, E320, E420 & E500, the diesels still used the traditional method of naming , such as; 250D etc. The W124 series was one of the finest cars produced by Mercedes-benz, and with the V8's in the 400/420 & 500 it was super mighty, this car was simply in a class of its own, typical of all E-class's.
   The W124 series is now recognised as one of the best-built and most reliable of Mercedes models. The W210, its successor, was one of the first products of a new regime that stopped the "over engineering" of Mercedes cars to reduce costs.
