Mercedes stayed away from the luxocoupe market for a nearly a decade (1972-1980) but came back in a big way with the S-Class derived, C126 variant in 1981. Although its underpinnings were shared with the big sedans, there were no common body panels. This model also evidenced continuing advancements in aerodynamics, as the look got smoother, the mirrors were faired into the A-pillars, the headlights were flush mounted, and so forth. The 560 is the one to have, with 275 horsepower and musclecar style torque. The SEC lived a 10-year production life, and was a strong seller.
