   The sporty compact concept applied to the full-size Chevrolet; worked remarkably well. Sixes were available for 1962-64 though not many were built. SS equipment, introduced mid-1961, was available only for the top-line Impala. The V8 hardtop and convertible are the center of collector interest today.
   The Chevy 283/ 327 offered a good combination of power and efficiency, while the big-block (348 in 1961, 409 in 1961-64) provided neck-snapping performance. The typical SS also had handling and brake options and 3- or 4-speed manual gearbox besides regular items like bucket seats, console, and deluxe interior. Big, but more competent on twisty back roads than many sports car drivers suspect.
