Bel Air
Top-of-the-line "classic Chevy," and the most desirable standard Chevrolets on today's market. Outstanding styling, high-performance potential, and fine build quality have created a huge collector following. As with the downmarket models, Bel Air values vary considerably with year. The 1955s and '57s are more in demand than the 1956s. Interest apparently relates to original sales, and 1956 was not a record year for Detroit. Stylewise, the 1955 is the purest and finest; the '56 has a reasonable if ordinary facelift; the '57 is the boldest (a quality collectors either despise or applaud). All mid-'50s Bel Airs are still very hot items, so time is of the essence. If you find one for sale and don't take it, rest assured someone else quickly will.
One-Fifty
Bottom-of-the-line doesn't mean undesirable when it comes to mid-'50s Chevys. Excellent styling and V8 engines offering up to 1 hp per cubic inch by 1957 make even the plain-Jane One Fiftys definite collector's items. But you've got to have the "right" equipment, which usually means a hairy engine and stick shift. Chevrolet offered a wide assortment of engine tunes and two different V8 displacements, and even the milder versions provide sparkling performance. All Chevys in these years are the right size, too—not too small for six passengers, not too big to get out of their own way. The two-door Utility sedan is too bare, the four-door too "practical." We'd take the standard 1957 two-door with a 283 V8, a leadfoot's temptation if ever there were one.
Two-Ten
Midrange series in the enormously popular 1955-57 Chevy lineup, boasting a higher trim standard than the One-Fifty but less sparkle than the Bel Air. The latter had more appeal when new, and does today. The sporty Two-Tens are more affordable than their Bel Air counterparts, however, and offer the same attractive styling, features, and performance. Fewer were sold new, so fewer are around now. Though Chevy's full range of engines was available, most Two-Tens were equipped for workaday duty only.
