Due to styling priorities favoring higher-priced GM makes, Chevy was a Johnny-come-lately to the hardtop ranks, though it beat both Ford and Plymouth by a year. The smoothly executed Bel Air had the standard GM treatment: a convertible-like deluxe interior, simulated top bows on the headliner, and a price just shy of the real convertible's. But buyers loved the hardtop Chevy. Sales shot up in 1951, only to drop when the industry lost momentum during the Korean War's opening stages.
