Harley Earl and company attended to Chevrolet's first postwar re-style after all other GM cars except Pontiac, so these two makes used prewar shells through 1948. But when change did come it was dramatic: the '49 Chevys were some of the best looking GM products ever, and were precision built as well. Power finally went up for 1950 with arrival of Powerglide two-speed automatic, for which the Chevy six was given increased displacement and 15 percent more horsepower.
Mundane then and now, the '49s nevertheless make a good choice for routine transportation, and a good, clean original will never lose its value.
