La 3/20 fut remplacée en février 1934 par la 309. Malgré l’introduction, l’année précédente, de la 303 six cylindres, la firme BMW croyait encore qu’elle pourrait vendre une quatre cylindres. Alors, elle prit le châssis de la 303 avec son élégante gamme de carrosseries et l’équipa d’un nouveau moteur 845 cm3. L’évaluation du marché par la firme fut précise puisque, entre 1934 et 1936, la 309 quatre cylindres se vendit trois fois mieux que la 303 six cylindres.
   Le moteur de la 309 était simplement une version quatre cylindres du six cylindres de la 303, et utilisait le supplément de métal entre les cylindres en ayant un plus grand alésage de 58 mm. La course de 80 mm, toutefois, restait identique. Avec une puissance au frein de 22 ch, une 309 ordinaire était capable de consommer 4,7 litres au cent à vitesse maximale.

   The 3/20 was replaced in February 1934 by the 309. Despite the introduction the year before of the six-cylinder 303, BMW still believed it could sell a four-cylinder car. So it took the 303 chassis and its stylish range of bodies and fitted it with a new 845cc engine. The company's assessment of the market was spot-on, between 1934 and 1936, the four-cylinder 309 sold three times as well as the six-cylinder 303.
   
   The 309's engine was simply a four-cylinder edition of the 303's six, which made use of the extra metal between the cylinders by having a larger 58mm bore. The 80mm stroke remained unchanged however. With 22bhp, a typical 309 was capable of 50mpg flat-out.
