Depuis le début des années cinquante le marché obligeait les constructeurs à produire des voitures moins luxueuses et plus fonctionnelles. Alfa Roméo ne pouvait, malgré cette tendance, renoncer à son image sportive. Son objectif devint naturellement de concevoir une voiture qui serait économique en ayant des performances brillantes pour une clientèle particulière. C'est ainsi que le 4 cylindres 1900 dessinée par l'ingénieur Orazio Satta vint à voir le jour en 1950.
   La nouvelle voiture était essentielle, équilibrée, avec des lignes attractives tout en maintenant une conduite sportive et des performances dans le style Alfa Roméo, grâce à un tout nouveau châssis. Elle acquit ce slogan de « la berline familiale qui gagne des courses ».
   En 1953 on ajouta un modèle plus puissant, la Ti Super model et plus tard les Coupé Sprint et Super Sprint qui ont été développés par le carrossier Touring.

   Since the early 1950s, the market forced automakers to produce fewer luxury and more practical cars. Alfa Romeo, in spite of this mainstream, would not abandon its sporty image. Its objective naturally became that of designing a car which would be economical while offering brilliant performances and aimed at a specific clientele. That is the reason why the 4-cylinder 1900, designed by engineer Orazio Satta, was created in 1950. The new car was essential, balanced, with attractive lines and combined excellent sporty road holding and Alfa Romeo-style performances thanks to a brand-new chassis. It was referred to as the “race winning family sedan”.
   In 1953, a more powerful model was added to the line, the Ti Super model, as well as, later on, the Coupé Sprint and Super Sprint which were developed by bodymaker Touring.
