Launched at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 1965, the 1000 was based on the Fiat 850. Two coupe's and a spider were shown at that show, one of each reaching production, known as the Coupe OT1000 and Spider OT1000. The other coupe, the OTR featured a much more modified engine and was produced only in very small numbers. For motorsport a couple of hundred OTS Coupes (and later a smaller number of OTSS's) were produced. The engine in all variants was a 982cc development of the original 850 unit. The OTR used a completely revised cylinder head with a different valve layout, allowed by the new twin rocker-shafts ! The OTR and OTS used relatively mildly tuned engines in road trim, whilst the wildest of all was the OTSS which had the original style cylinder head and single carburettor but managed to produce around 90bhp in Group 3 race trim. The OTR/OTS/OTSS and the OT are most easily differentiated since the former have a radiator mounted in the nose to cool the engine coolant and thus a grille. The latter use the standard Fiat 850 setup, although a dummy grille is fitted at the front. Later another variant emerged which was a Spider modified by Bertone (including a welded on hard-top) and fitted with the highly tuned OTR engine. Used heavily in motorsport, the OTS&SS was continually developed, until in 1970 it featured a five speed transmission and Kugelfischer fuel injection, and produced 103bhp! A further development of the OT1000, and still using a modified Fiat 850 bodyshell, the OT2000 used a 1964cc Abarth/Simca twin-cam engine with twin 45 DCOE carburettors which managed to produce around 185bhp. As usual with Abarths, production figures are rather uncertain, but very few, probably less than five, were built.
